Best Short Trips from Singapore (November 2026)
8 destinations ranked by travel time, budget, and how good they are right now
November is one of the best windows to leave Singapore — school holidays are starting, the year-end rush is a few weeks away, and several nearby destinations are hitting their seasonal sweet spot. Bangkok in particular is at its coolest and driest from November, while JB and Melaka are perennially good any time of year.
We ranked 8 destinations by how easy they are to reach, what a realistic 2-night trip costs, and how good November specifically is. JB is the obvious no-brainer for a weekend, but Bangkok edges everything else for a long weekend if you're willing to fly.

Johor Bahru
JB is the default quick-exit for Singaporeans — petrol, groceries, massage, and a meal that costs a quarter of what it does across the Causeway. In November, the crowds build as school holidays approach but it remains the easiest and cheapest option by far. City Square Mall, KSL City, Paradigm Mall, and AEON Tebrau are all within a few minutes of each other. For food, Restoran Stulang Laut (seafood), Hiap Joo Bakery (banana cake), and the Pasar Karat night market are worth the trip alone.
The RTS Link (Woodlands North MRT ↔ JB Sentral) — check current operational status before planning, as opening dates have shifted. If it is running, it removes the Causeway traffic entirely and is the most convenient option. Causeway Link buses (CW1, CW2) from Queen Street or Kranji MRT remain the budget standby at around SGD 3–5 one way.
November tip: Book accommodation at least 2–3 weeks ahead once school holidays begin. Weekday trips are noticeably less crowded and petrol station queues are shorter.
Batam
Batam is the cheap beach option for Singaporeans who don't want to fly. A 2-night trip with return ferry, a mid-range hotel, and meals easily comes in under SGD 300 per person. The island has improved significantly — Nongsa and Batam Centre have good beach resorts, seafood is excellent, and spa treatments are a fraction of Singapore prices. Major ferry operators include Batam Fast, BRF Ferry, and Sindo Ferry from HarbourFront.
November tip: November marks the start of the drier northeast monsoon season, generally good weather for Batam. Book ferry tickets online in advance for the Friday evening or Saturday morning slots — they sell out.
Bintan
Bintan is Batam's more resort-oriented neighbour — the Bintan Resorts zone (Banyan Tree, Angsana, Nirwana Gardens) offers proper beach-resort infrastructure with watersports, golf, and spa. It is more expensive than Batam but significantly cheaper than flying to Bali for a similar experience. The ferry goes from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal directly to the Bintan Resorts ferry terminal.
November tip: November weather is generally good in Bintan. Resort packages often include the ferry — compare the bundled rate against buying separately before booking.
Melaka
Melaka (Malacca) is a UNESCO World Heritage city with some of the best food in Malaysia — chicken rice balls, cendol, Nyonya cuisine, and satay celup. Jonker Walk is most lively on Friday and Saturday nights. The city is compact enough to walk or cycle around in a day, and accommodation along the river is atmospheric and affordable. Combine with JB as a stop if driving.
November tip: November is one of Melaka's better months — less rain than the peak monsoon months that affect Malaysia's east coast. Weekends on Jonker Walk are busy; book accommodation early.
Penang
Penang consistently ranks as one of Asia's best food cities — char kway teow, asam laksa, nasi kandar, and cendol at prices that make Singapore hawker food seem expensive. George Town's heritage zone is walkable and photogenic. Budget flights on Scoot or AirAsia make this one of the most affordable fly-there destinations from Singapore. An overnight bus is another option if you want to save on accommodation.
November tip: Penang's northwest coast (Batu Ferringhi) can see some November rain, but George Town itself is generally fine. Book flights 3–4 weeks ahead for November school holiday period to avoid fare spikes.
Kuala Lumpur
KL is Malaysia's most complete city-break destination — Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Jalan Alor food street, Bukit Bintang shopping, and day trips to Genting or Putrajaya. The Aeroline VIP bus from Beach Road is a comfortable door-to-door option for around SGD 40–50 return. If flying, check Scoot and AirAsia for fares that often undercut the bus on advance booking.
November tip: 11.11 Single's Day deals hit KL malls hard — if you're going for shopping, timing it around 11 November makes sense. November can be rainy in KL afternoons; plan outdoor activities for mornings.
Bangkok
November is arguably Bangkok's best month — the rainy season ends, temperatures drop to a relatively comfortable 28–32°C, and the city is busy without the peak December–January tourist crunch. Street food at Yaowarat (Chinatown), rooftop bars at sunset, temples in the cool morning, and Chatuchak weekend market cover the Bangkok checklist in 3–4 days. The Loy Krathong festival usually falls in November — floating lanterns on the Chao Phraya are a genuine visual highlight.
November tip: Check the Loy Krathong date (it varies by lunar calendar) — if it falls during your stay it's worth building the itinerary around. Book flights at least 4 weeks ahead for November school holiday period.
Bali
Bali earns its reputation — Ubud's rice terraces and temple culture, Seminyak's beach clubs, Canggu's cafes, and Nusa Dua's resort strip cover almost any travel style. The honest caveat for November: it marks the start of Bali's wet season (November–March). You can still have a great trip — rain tends to fall in heavy afternoon showers rather than all day — but beach days are less reliable than in the dry season (May–October). Ubud and inland activities are less affected than coastal areas.
November tip: If going to Bali in November, base yourself in Ubud for at least 2 nights — inland culture and temples are unaffected by the rain and genuinely spectacular. Check a 10-day forecast before you go and manage beach expectations accordingly.
November 2026: what to know before you go
School holidays start in November
Singapore's year-end school holidays begin in mid-November. JB, Batam, and Bintan get noticeably more crowded, and accommodation prices rise. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for any destination if you're travelling during the school holiday window. Weekday trips to JB in early November (before school holidays) avoid the worst of it.
Bangkok is at its seasonal best
November marks the beginning of Bangkok's cool dry season — the best weather of the year. If you only have one long-weekend trip to use in November, Bangkok is the strongest pick on weather alone. Check the Loy Krathong festival date (late October to mid-November by lunar calendar) and time your trip to coincide.
11.11 Single's Day in KL and JB
11 November (11.11) is a major shopping day across Malaysia. KL malls and JB City Square run significant deals. If shopping is part of the plan, timing a KL or JB trip around 11 November makes sense.
Bali: check before you commit
November is the start of Bali's wet season. The island is still worth visiting — particularly for Ubud and inland areas — but beach holidays are more weather-dependent than in June–September. If you have flexibility, consider pushing a Bali trip to May–September instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest short trip from Singapore?
JB remains the cheapest — a 1-night trip including bus, budget hotel, meals, and petrol fill-up can cost under SGD 100–150 per person. Batam is close behind once you factor in the ferry (around SGD 40–60 return), with very cheap accommodation and food once you arrive.
Do I need a visa for any of these destinations?
Singapore passport holders enter Malaysia visa-free and Indonesia visa-free (up to 30 days under the visa-on-arrival free arrangement, check current status). Thailand allows visa-free entry for Singapore passport holders for up to 30 days. Always verify current requirements with the destination country's immigration authority before travelling — policies can change.
What is the RTS Link and is it running?
The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) connects Woodlands North MRT directly to JB Sentral, eliminating the Causeway traffic queue. Check the current operational status before planning — opening dates have shifted multiple times. If running, it is the most convenient option for JB day trips and short stays.
How far in advance should I book for November?
For flights (Penang, KL, Bangkok, Bali): 3–5 weeks ahead for reasonable fares during the school holiday window. For ferries (Batam, Bintan): book online at least a week ahead for weekend slots. For JB accommodation during school holidays: 2–3 weeks minimum.
